The Complementary Nature

(TCN) Why do we divide our world into contraries? Why do we perceive and interpret so many of life's contraries as mutually exclusive either/or dichotomies, such as individual vs. collective, liberal vs. conservative, body vs. mind, nature vs. nurture, and cooperation vs. competition? We contend that ubiquitous contrarieties of human experience are actually inextricable dynamic complementary aspects, whose existence and phenomenology are thoroughly grounded in the science of coordination called Coordination Dynamics (CD). In the book, "The Complementary Nature" by Kelso and Engstrøm (MIT Press, 2006) the squiggle sign "~" was nominated as a useful symbolic expression of complementary pairs or “squiggles” like individual~collective, brain~mind, and cooperation~competition. Each expresses the inextricable dynamic complementary nature of a given “squiggle" and its complementary aspects grounded in CD.

The Squiggle Sense

(TSS) "Sixth Sense” of The Complementary Nature, the dynamic, complementary dance of inextricable complementary aspects. It’s a modality present in every human nervous system. Ironically, most remain unaware, are ‘blind’ to its existence and crucial role it plays in their daily lives. The ‘Metastabilians’ seek to awaken and engage their squiggle sense, to wield it in their life pursuits in any field, at any level of interest. The squiggle sense is a modality of ‘relative phase’, sensitive to the very coordination dynamics that produces it. A person that has awakened, appreciates, is inspired by and intentionally engages their squiggle sense, their ‘sixth sense’ of the complementary nature of themselves and their world is by definition, a “Metastabilian."

Coordination Dynamics

(CD) Coordination Dynamics, defined broadly as "the science of coordination", describes, explains and predicts how patterns of coordination form, adapt, persist and change in living things. In Coordination Dynamics the parts communicate via mutual information exchange and information is meaningful and specific to the forms coordination takes. Coordination Dynamics embraces both spontaneous self-organizing tendencies and the need to guide or direct them in specific ways in a single conceptual framework. Life, brain, mind and behavior are hypothesized to be linked by virtue of sharing a common underlying coordination dynamics. Coordination Dynamics has been proposed by Kelso and Engstrøm to be the science of the complementary nature. Metastability, a key phenomenon in CD, has been suggested to be the "complementarity of the 21st century".

Dražen Pavlović

(DP) Professional oil painter and performance artist. Co-founder along with David Engstrøm of The Metastabilian Movement. Owner~operator of Atelier Pavlovich in Varazdin, Croatia. Chairmen of the managing board of the LUV Art Association of Varaždin, and guide of the LUV Gallery. Member of HDLU Croatian Association of Artists, Zagreb, 1995-present. Founder of the famous painting colony Julijana E Draskowich (1989–1999), Trakošćan Croatia. Artistic Trajectory: 40 professional and critically acclaimed solo exhibitions; 150 appearances in local and international group exhibitions (Slovenia, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Germany, Macedonia, Bosnia and Hercegovina, USA). Organizes produces and participates in art-based humanitarian actions and performance art installations.
