Dynamic Patterns
Forward by Hermann Haken: “For the past twenty years Scott Kelso’s research has focused on extending the physical concepts of self-organization and the mathematical tools of nonlinear dynamics to understand how human beings (and human brains) perceive, intend, learn, control, and coordinate complex behaviors.
In this book, Kelso proposes a new, general framework within which to connect brain, mind, and behavior. Kelso’s prescription for mental life breaks dramatically with the classical computationall approach that is still the operative framework for many newer psychological and neurophysiological studies. His core thesis is that the creation and evolution of patterned behavior at all levels—from neurons to mind—is governed by the generic processes of self-organization.
Both human brain and behavior are shown to exhibit features of pattern-forming dynamical systems, including multistability, abrupt phase transitions, crises, and intermittency. Dynamic Patterns brings together different aspects of this approach to the study of human behavior, using simple

Coordination Dynamics
“Coordination represents one of the most striking, most taken for granted, but least understood features of living things. Recently a new foundation for understanding coordination has emerged called Coordination Dynamics. This book brings together scientists from all over the world who have defined and developed the field of Coordination Dynamics. Grounded in the concepts of self-organization and the tools of nonlinear dynamics, appropriately extended to handle informational aspects of living things, Coordination Dynamics aims to understand the coordinated functioning of a variety of different systems at multiple levels of description. The book addresses the themes of Coordination Dynamics and Dynamic Patterns in the context of the following topics: Coordination of Brain and Behavior, Perception-Action Coupling, Control, Posture, Learning, Intention, Attention, and Cognition.”

Fluxor Metastabilian’s Synopsis: “The squiggle order~chaos embodies one of the deepest complementarities of existence. Order provides stability, structure, and predictability. Chaos brings turbulence, unpredictability, and the seed of novelty. Their dance shapes the dynamics of life, nature, and thought itself.”
Dynamical Mode 1: Only order

Examples: A crystal lattice; a strictly regulated hierarchy; ritual repeated without deviation.
Notes: Though secure, pure order

The Complementary Nature
“Why do we divide our world into contraries? Why do we perceive and interpret so many of life’s contraries as mutually exclusive, either/or dichotomies such as individual~collective, self~other, body~mind, nature~nurture, cooperation~competition? Throughout history, many have recognized that truth may well lie in between such polar opposites. In The Complementary Nature, Scott Kelso and David Engstrøm contend that ubiquitous contraries are complementary and propose a comprehensive, empirically based scientific theory of how the polarized world and the world in between can be reconciled. They nominate the tilde, or squiggle (~), as the symbolic punctuation for reconciled complementary pairs. Experiments show that the human brain is capable of displaying two apparently contradictory, mutually exclusive behaviors at the same time. Coordination dynamics—a mathematically expressed theory that reconciles the scientific language of “states” with the novel dynamical language of “tendencies”—attests to the complementary nature inherent in human brains and behavior. It may explain, Kelso

motion~rest
TSS: “Only motion, only rest, either motion or rest, both motion and rest, motion changing to rest, rest changing to motion, between motion and rest, neither motion nor rest, beyond motion and rest…”
Fluxor Metastabilian’s Synopsis: “The squiggle motion~rest captures the pulse of existence as activity and stillness. Motion brings flow, change, and transformation; rest grants pause, stability, and renewal. Their interplay underlies rhythms of body, mind, and cosmos.”
Dynamical Mode 1: Only motion
Definition: A state of unceasing activity, flow without pause.
Examples: A rushing river; ceaseless thought; relentless social or technological change.
Notes: Pure motion can become turbulence — directionless, unanchored, exhausting.
Dynamical Mode 2: Only rest
Definition: A state of complete stillness and stability, absence of activity.
Examples: A mountain unmoved; deep dreamless sleep; the silence of meditation.
Notes: Pure rest can bring peace but also stagnation if isolated from movement.
Dynamical Mode 3: Either motion
