Newer science of coordination, named, pioneered and developed by eminent neuroscientist J. A. Scott Kelso. CD—a mathematically expression and experimentally tested theory that reconciles the scientific language of "states" with the novel dynamical language of "tendencies"—attests to the complementary nature inherent in human brains and behavior. It may explain, why we (and nature) tend to partition things, events, and ideas into pairs. Experiments show that the human brain is capable of displaying two apparently contradictory, mutually exclusive behaviors at the same time. Such 'metastability' has been studied deeply, and now provides a clear-cut methodology for this evolving theory of brain~behavior that can be applied to areas and developments outside the neurosciences. It has the potential to aide the discovery and application of reconciliations within~between disparate fields.

Glenwood and Martha Creech Chair in Science. Professor of Complex Systems and Brain Sciences Professor of Psychology, Biological Sciences and Biomedical Science. Team Leader of the Human Brain and Behavior Laboratory. Research interests: The problem of coordination in living things; connecting levels of brain and behavior through theory and experiment; principles and mechanisms of coordination dynamics (e.g. in sensorimotor integration, learning, perception, language, and development) using brain imaging (EEG, MEG, fMRI) and behavioral measures. Co-author along with David Engstrøm of The Complementary Nature (MIT Press 2006). Founder and Pioneer of Coordination Dynamics.

Why do we divide our world into contraries? Why do we perceive and interpret so many of life's contraries as mutually exclusive, either/or dichotomies? Throughout history, many have recognized that truth may actually lie in between such polar opposites. In their book on the subject, J. A. Scott Kelso and David Engstrøm contend that contraries are complementary, and propose a comprehensive, empirically based scientific theory of how the polarized world and the world in between can be reconciled. They nominated the tilde, or 'squiggle' (~), as symbolic of the complementary nature of complementary aspects.

Co-founder of The Metastabilian Movement. Artist~Scientist, Musician, Writer and Muse. Ph.D. Neuropharmacology, UCHSC, Denver. In 1991 Engstrøm began working at the Center for Complex Systems and Brain Sciences at FAU in Boca Raton with eminent neuroscientist J. A. Scott Kelso and learning Coordination Dynamics.  From its inception applying its paradigm to anticipation~reaction transitions in human motor behavior, their work together took a surprising, certainly fascinating, unexpected departure. Since about 1995,  Engstrøm and Kelso have been  developing a conceptual link between Coordination Dynamics and Complementary Pairs. Kelso and Engstrøm co-wrote their first book about their work, The Complementary Nature (MIT Press, 2006). Currently a sequel is in the works! Meanwhile, in 2010, Engstrøm met Croatian master artist Drazen Pavlovic online, Engstrøm taken with Pavlovic's works, and Pavlovic resonating with ideas and concepts in  The Complementary Nature, and the two launched The Metastabilian Movement in 2011. Engstrøm is also a professional entertainer, singer, guitarist and songwriter who has played over 2000 live performances in 11 countries.

Individual~collective awareness~pursuit of "the squiggle sense of the complementary nature". Co-founded in 2011 by Metastabilian artist~scientist David Engstrøm and artist~painter, Drazen Pavlovic.  Grounded in the science Coordination Dynamics andphilosophy of complementary pairs (or squiggles), Metastabilian artists  explore, employ an express their works via compelling, valuable new information about the human brain~mind. But The Metastabilan Movement isn't only an Art Movement. Awakening and wielding the squiggle sense is a gift, a legacy of the brain~mind itself, and so is relevant to all field~levels of human interest~endeavor, the individual~collective awareness~pursuit leads to a vast and mostly uncharted frontier for creativity~inspiration...

"Sixth Sense of The Complementary Nature, the sentient faculty that Metastabilians seek to awaken, explore, inspire and engage in their creative pursuits in any field, at any level and context. Metastable mode of Coordination Dynamics at the sentient level; metastable brain~mind perception~action. The squiggle sense senses the dynamics, inextricability and complementarity of complementary pairs. It is stimulated by the "coordinated dance" of complementary aspects. Once intentionally engaged, awareness of such inextricable dynamic complementarity is the essence of a Eureka moment. A person that has awakened and engages their squiggle sense to be inspired by, explore, appreciate and intentionally engage the complementary nature of themselves and their world we call Metastabilian."

Pairs of complementary aspects, written in the syntax developed by Kelso and Engstrøm "ca1~ca2" where ca stands for complementary aspect, and the squiggle sign (~) symbolizes their complementary aspects, and indicates that coordination dynamics is relevant to descriptions of this complementarity. Also called "squiggles", as the complementary aspects are thought to be idealized extrema of phenomena which include them and all that lies between and around them.

"Symbolizes the complementary nature of complementary aspects as well as indicating that coordination dynamics is relevant to descriptions of this complementarity."

Omnidirectional Boundary~domain of The Squiggle Sense.

Pioneering discovery~exploration of Metastabilion, that leads to a vast new frontier for imagination~creativity.

Welcome to The Metastabilian Movement, an individual~collective awareness~pursuit of The Squiggle Sense of The Complementary Nature, Co-founded in 2011 by David Engstrøm and Drazen Pavlovic. An art movement based in valuable new information about the human brain~mind, relevant and useful to all field~levels of human interest~endeavor, that leads to a vast new frontier for creativity~inspiration...
